Smart People, Smart Homes
Being green doesn't just mean replacing old bulbs with energy efficient ones and recycling plastics anymore. With more and more homeowners wanting to stay put versus relocating or upgrading to newer, more expensive options, people are now becoming smarter about the space and resources they have and making the most of where they live now.

A Note From Barry - The Joy of Remodeling
While I have been remodeling clients' homes for over thirty years, I have not had much occasion to remodel my own home over the years. Brenda and I moved into our current home 11 years ago and hadn't done anything since, so it was definitely due for a minor face lift. My plan was minor, but of course it grew just like many of my clients' projects grow.

Start Your Remodeling Plans Today
You managed to make it through the Thanksgiving holiday and a house full of guests, but as you prepare for the next round over the Christmas season, you're realizing that a remodel is in order for 2012. More for the functionality and enjoyment of your home than an increased resale value (although that's definitely a bonus!).

Do the Holidays Stress You Out?
We can't help with the strained relationships, but we sure can help design your home to help give everyone the space they need to make things more peaceful and enjoyable.

Celebrate National Kitchen & Bath Remodeling Month
Are you tired of having an outdated kitchen, old flooring and faucets that drip relentlessly no matter what you do? Does your bathroom still look like it did when you moved in more than 15 years ago? Or maybe you’ve decided to move out altogether and start fresh, but are finding that your dated home is making the process of selling even more difficult?

A Note From Barry - Celebrating Four STAR Awards!
We are celebrating the win of four STAR Awards in August! This annual competition gives us the opportunity to show off some of our projects and compete with other remodelers in several categories. Each project is judged by a panel of experts who work in the industry in other geographical areas of the state. Their scores make up 85% of the total score. Also weighing with 15% of the score is the homeowner through a homeowner’s survey.

A Note From Barry - Lessons Learned from the Garden
The amazing aspect of growing thins is what it teaches us about life and dealing with uncontrollable circumstances. I had 75 yeard of laf mulch compost hauled in to mix with my red clay soil, which certainly helped, but because it was so wet, it tended to clump up instead of mixing well with the soil.

Making Your Home More Accessible for the Elderly
On January 1, 2011, Baby Boomers officially began crossing over into the "65 and older" category. Approximately 10,000 more will continue passing that threshold every day for the next 19 years. With more than 70% planning on living out the rest of their lives in the space where they celebrated their milestone birthdays, families supporting their decisions are faced with helping make their homes safer and their spaces more accessible.

A Note From Barry
We have mixed news this month as we say goodbye to an awesome team member and say hello to a new one. David Corbett raised the bar as a project manager, made many process improvements in his role as Operations Manager, in sales and many other areas of involvement. We are very grateful for his contributions and regret that he will no longer be a part of the team.

National Home Improvement Month
Are you selling? Addressing changing family needs or just upgrading? Your reasons for remodeling can impact your decisions—for example, if you’re selling, your choices may be more about buyer appeal than personal taste.

A Note From Barry- Choose a Problem-Solver over a Good Scheduler
Thanks to everyone who came out to see us at the Southern Ideal Home Show. We had a great time learning about your plans for your home, and hopefully we were able to give you some helpful advice and guidance. The show also gives us a chance to talk with other companies in our industry.

Our Featured Project
This month I want to feature a renovation project that we recently completed. The homeowners contacted us in the hopes that we might be able to accomplish their lengthy list of goals for their home. They purchased the home because they loved the convenience of its Chapel Hill location and its heavily wooded lot.

A Note from Barry
Thankfully, this year is beginning like most years - the start of several new jobs and the wrap up of some as well. One of the projects that we just finished is a kitchen and family room renovation that I'd like to show off.

2011 Kitchen Trends?
The hustle and bustle of living that can take any house and turn it into a home begins and ends in the kitchen. Whether it's entertaining friends, cooking dinner for loved ones, or just kicking back with your favorite beverage after a long day's work, the kitchen often becomes the first course for every activity and really defines the space where comfort meets conversation.

December 2010 Newsletter
I cannot believe that it is December already! I guess the saying is true, the older you get, the faster time flies. Or could it be that having six children and seven grand children, I am so busy that I cannot keep up with everything that is going on?

Is Your Home Ready for Holiday Guests?
It's that time of year again that we look forward to but dread all at the same time…time for throwing holiday parties and inviting friends and family to come visit. It's a lot of fun, but it makes me tired just thinking about it.

It feels like summer has let go and fall is finally here! What a wonderful time of year---with the beauty of the fall foliage, the cool crisp air, and the delicious comfort foods of the season. It's also a great time of year to plan that screened porch or sunroom that you've been contemplating.

How Much Will Your Project Cost?
Let me start off by saying, there is no square foot price that I can give you. That only works when you are building a brand new house and I am the one making most of the decisions that impact price.

Great Project Manager Characteristics
Honestly, for several years, westruggled to find someone to fill the position of Project Manager who could meet our expectations and those of our clients. It seemed like I had to fill in more often than not to make sure our client’s needs were met and the job got done.

I Love Gardening!
I really enjoy gardening. It is a lot of hard work, but is very satisfying to put seeds in the ground and see the plants come up, mature and bear fruit.

Why We Use 3D CAD
Fifteen years ago, I decided to begin using CAD software in order to help my clients visualize the design options for their homes. I previously would draw sketches and elevations, but needed a better method.

Tree House!
Spring has sprung, and with it the urge to get started on those outdoor living projects. One such project that we have been working on is a tree house for my oldest son's family–David and Laura and their three children, Bryce, Stacy and Jay.

Remodeling and the Economy
This month I wanted to talk a little about what I see taking place in the economy and particularly in the remodeling industry. First of all, I took note when I saw a news story on TV last night talking about where we have come from in regards to the stock market since this time last year.

New Years Blessings
It is the start of a new year, and if you are anything like me and a lot of the people I know, I am glad that 2009 is history, and I am looking forward to 2010 and whatever it brings. Last year, business was tough, but we have survived and will continue to do so.

This last month has been an exciting one for both me and the company. My oldest son, David, has joined the company. He will be taking over the responsibility for the production and management of each project.
