The Crowning Touch: Five Ways to Add Flair to Any Room

If you are renting and aren’t allowed to paint those drab white walls, or you just need to change things up without spending a lot of money, here are some tips on how to add a little flair to your home.

Throw Pillows. One of the easiest and least expensive ways to add some pizzazz to a room is the addition of throw pillows to a couch, bed or bench. Throw pillows come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and textures. Choose shades that will highlight the colors in a piece of artwork, or add a pop of color to a neutral color palette color with bright spring hues.

Artwork. An intriguing piece of art on the wall will not only add interest to the room, it is an expression of your style and personality. Support local artists in your community by purchasing some of their work. Or, if you love taking photos of your family, choose one or two of your favorite colorful prints to enlarge and frame, and make them the focal point of your room.

Floor Coverings. The right floor covering can be a work of art in itself. A rug adds color and appeal to your room, and softens hardwood and tile floors by adding warmth and comfort.

Statement Furniture. Think about giving some flair to a desk, dresser or credenza with a couple of coats of colorful paint. Check out garage sales or antique shops for one-of-a-kind pieces to refinish and paint yourself using these simple steps. You can also purchase or reupholster a chair or sofa with a fun pattern to make an accent piece for your room.

Window Coverings. Draperies, curtains, shutters or blinds – no matter what you choose for your window covering, they definitely make a statement. Sheer curtains fluttering in the breeze will add charm to any room, and richly-colored drapes provide elegance and sophistication. If privacy is your aim, wooden blinds or shutters block light as well as prying eyes.
